Europe’s food system – striking the right chord

Brussels, March 2021

Every spring, the Forum for the Future of Agriculture gathers EU Commissioners, industry leaders, academics and ministers to discuss how European and global agriculture can develop to simultaneously feed a growing population and safeguard the natural environment. This year, WWF led an online webinar about striking the right chord to support nature-friendly farming.

Six key points highlighted at the Forum are practised by the farmers who win the Baltic Sea Farmer of the Year Award:

  1. Learning-by-doing – collaboration across sectors like business, farming, climate research and policy is essential to promote learning and innovative farming practices.
  2. Seeing is believing – nature positive farming is possible and it is working.
  3. Farmers’ welfare matters – economic security and wellbeing are key drivers for increasing the production of plant protein within the boundaries of sustainable land use in Europe.
  4. Better informed consumers can help accelerate scaling up calls for healthier diets and more transparency in the food system.
  5. Farm-to-fork strategies cannot be achieved without an integrated approach which in turn requires active engagement from every sector in the food system.
  6. “Soil is nature’s magic carpet”, as one delegate put it. “We walk on it, build on it and yet it feeds us and is home to a quarter of all biodiversity on the planet.”
